Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) Release Schedule

The release schedule for Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) has been posted to lthe Ubuntu Wiki.  Here are the important dates:

June 26     Alpha 1 (for opt-in flavors)

July 24       Alpha 2 (for opt-in flavors)

August 28  Beta 1 (for opt-in flavors)

September 25    Final Beta (for all versions)

October 16   Final Release (again, for all versions)

The Alphas and the first Beta are for Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu and other flavors.  These do not have to follow the same release schedule as Ubuntu itself.

Ubuntu 14.04 Release Schedule

The following is tentative and subject to change.

The Ubuntu 14.04 LTS release schedule is now available on the Ubuntu Wiki.  This will be the T series release.

As with the last two release cycles, Ubuntu proper will participate starting with the final beta milestone. The siblings, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu etc. will be available for testing sooner, with two alphas and one beta.

Alpha 1 – December 19th (for flavors)
Alpha 2 – January 23rd (for flavors)
Beta 1 – February 27th (for flavors)
Final Beta – March 27th
Release Candidate – April 10th
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS – April 17th

Saucy Salamander Release Schedule

The release schedule for Ubuntu 13.10, Saucy Salamander, is posted at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SaucySalamander/ReleaseSchedule.  Canonical is still staying with a final beta/ final release schedule for Ubuntu, with optional alphas and betas for the other flavors (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.).

Here is the schedule:

June 27             Alpha 1 (Opt-in flavors)

August 15          Ubuntu 12.04.3 (the third release of the LTS version)

September 5     Beta 1 (Opt-in flavors)

September 26   Final Beta

October 10        Release Candidate

October 17        Final Release

I do not feel ready yet to switch to Saucy Salamander.  I may reconsider my view sometime around September 5, when the snapshots are less likely to break.  I have been using the Humble Bundle Steam keys to download many games via Steam for Linux.  As much as this prepares me to have my machine hosed due to the way Steam games can be re-downloaded, it has also been a lot of work.

Happy Ubuntu-ing!

Raring Ringtail (Ubuntu 13.04) Will Not Have Alpha Releases

According to Nicholas Skaggs, the Ubuntu QA community coordinator for Canonical, the Ubuntu release schedule “has dropped all alphas, and the first beta, resulting in a beta and then final release milestone only. In addition, the freezes have been moved back a few weeks. The end result is the archive will not be frozen till late in the cycle, allowing development and testing to continue unencumbered.”

Thankfully, the flavors (Kubuntu, Edubuntu, etc.) will still be able to keep to the old ways if they choose to do so.

The Raring release schedule now looks like this:

March 28, 2013     Beta Release

April 25, 2013        Final Release

It is to be noted that the schedule for the flavors is different, though tentative:

December 6, 2012  Alpha 1

February 7, 2013    Alpha 2

March 7, 2013        Beta 1

March 28, 2013      Final Beta Release

April 18, 2013         Release Candidate

April 25, 2013         Final Release

Ubuntu 12.10 Release Schedule

Even though Ubuntu 12.10 has not yet been named, a release schedule has been posted at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QReleaseSchedule:

June 7             Alpha 1

June 28           Alpha 2

August 2          Alpha 3

September 6    Beta 1

September 27  Beta 2

October 18       Final Release

I am looking forward to finding out what the “Q” animal will be.  Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too much longer.
