Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 1 Has Been Released

Quantal Quetzal, Ubuntu 12.10, was released on June 7. It is a developer snapshot, meant to give a very early glimpse at the next version of Ubuntu.

To upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04 on a desktop system, press Alt + F2 and type in “update-manager -d” (without the quotes) into the command box.  Update Manager will then open up and tell you:  New distribution release ‘12.10’ is available.  Then, you just need to click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

Some new things with Quetzal desktop:

The CD and DVD versions are being consolidated into a single 800 mb image that can be used on a DVD or a USB stick.

The remainder of GNOME 3.4 is now in the Ubuntu archives including Disks, Evolution, Seahorse/GNOME Keyring, and Totem. Some parts of GNOME 3.5.1/3.5.2 have already arrived with more to follow as the developers target GNOME 3.6 for Ubuntu 12.10.

udisks2 was uploaded to quantal and is used as the default backend for Unity and GNOME.

Firefox and Thunderbird have been updated to the new 13 version.

Update Manager got a slightly new look, with more to come in the future.

Download the Alpha 1

This release is for developers only. The Ubuntu Desktop images are now bigger than a standard CD, and you should use a USB stick for installation.

You can download Alpha 1 ISOs from: (Ubuntu Desktop and Server) (Ubuntu Cloud Server) (Kubuntu) (Lubuntu) (Edubuntu DVD)

I will not be upgrading to Quantal at this time, because I am still working on bugs in Precise. One of these bugs made some of my Steam games fail. Once I get them working again, I plan to report on at least some of them .

Humble Indie Bundle V

Humble Indie Bundle V is now available at The bundle has a long list of interesting games, and even a download page for Ubuntu so you can use the Software Center. Here is the start of the front page as of June 8, 2012:

“We’ve added three games to Humble Indie Bundle V! If you’ve already purchased the bundle, then Braid, Super Meat Boy, and Lone Survivor are already on your download page! If you haven’t bought Humble Indie Bundle V yet, set your price higher than the average to get these excellent games in addition to Psychonauts, LIMBO, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, and Bastion!”

Not only do you get a bunch of good games – even more if you pay above the average donation – but you also get to help the developers and set some of the money aside for charity. (The charities are the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Child’s Play Foundation.
