grep -R doesn’t automatically search amazon

The following bug report landed on Launchpad four days ago, courtesy of akeane:

Dear “root owning” overlords,

When using grep recursively I only get local results:

grep -R fish_t /home/noob/fish_game/*

/home/noob/fish_game/fish.h: struct fish_t {
/home/noob/fish_game/fish.c: struct fish_t eric_the_ fish;

or worse:

grep -R shark_t /home/noob/fish_game/*

/home/noob/fish_game/fish.h: struct shark_t {
/home/noob/fish_game/fish.c: struct shark_t_t mark_sw;

I declare this a bug for two reasons:

1. The output is boring.
2. The terminal has more than 2 lines!!! It’s an unefficient use of my screenspace.

I believe the reason for this is that the grep command only searches locally for things I am actually looking for, I kind of expect the results I get from my codebase and as such it removes any sense of mystery or something new and exciting to spice up my dull geek existence. That’s boring, grep -R should also search amazon, so I get more exciting results such as:

This is less dull and also maximises the use of my terminal and hence increases my productivity.

Please can you change the grep warez to have this feature, and just install it on my machine while I’m down the pub, after all you do “erm, have root”, so it should be easy for you to do ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks Ubuntu devs!!!

Sent from my Unity device, (which is why it took several glacial ages and a couple of eras to get it done)

Please forgive me for not summarizing. The entire thread is worthy of note, as well. I only pray it doesn’t disappear.

I have to admit, though – once you get over the weirdness of searching for “cat food” (without the quotes” in the Unity dash, Amazon results can be useful.  ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal) Beta 2 Now Available

Ubuntu 12.10 has just been released. Here are some highlights:

The Nautilus file manager is being kept at 3.4.  The GNOME developers decided to trim down the latest Nautilus version, 3.6, to the point where it no longer provides features thought to be essential to Ubuntu.

Some online search results have been added to the Unity 6.6 dash.  Entries in the dash search bar now lead to a “More Suggestions” category which may include results from Amazon and Ubuntu One.  Canonical’s reason for adding search results from Amazon is that any Amazon purchases made through Ubuntu’s servers yield a small percentage to Canonical, helping to further their development of Ubuntu.

If you are running Precise – 12.04 – the easiest way to upgrade is to press the keys Alt and F2, and then enter “update-manager -d” (without the quotes).  Update Manager will then alert you that the new release 12.10 is available.  From there, you just need to click on Upgrade and follow the on-screen directions.

Quantal is also available for download.

Steam Beta Testing Imminent

Valve has announced on the company’s Linux blog that internal beta testing for their Steam client for Linux will be starting next week. There will also be a private external beta test for 1,000 users some time in October.

The private external beta will include Steam and one Valve game. Support will be limited to Ubuntu 12.04 and above.

Valve will be using a sign-up page for the external beta.

Ubuntu Sources List Generator Available for Quantal

The Ubuntu Sources List Generator is now available for Quantal. The other versions of Ubuntu that it handles at present are Lucid, Natty, Oneiric and Precise.

First, you give the generator your country, the version of Ubuntu you are using, and the repositories you need (of course, including the necessary ones like Main, Restricted, Universe, Multiverse, etc.). Then, you get output that can be used to replace your /etc/apt/sources.list, or read to give instructions to make some changes instead of replacing the whole file.

Ubuntu 13.04 (R) Release Schedule

A draft of the Ubuntu 13.04 (R) release schedule is now available.  Ubuntu 13.04 has not been named yet, but it has a release date – April 25, 2013.

Here is the official release timeline:

December 6, 2012          Alpha 1

February 7, 2013            Alpha 2

March 7, 2013                 Beta 1

March 28, 2013               Beta Release

April 18, 2013                  Release Candidate

April 25, 2013                  Final Release of Ubuntu 13.04

Also during this time period, Ubuntu 12.04.2, the second update of Ubuntu 12.04 Precise, will be released on January 31, 2013.

Humble Indie Bundle 6 Is Now Available

Theย Humble Bundle people have now introduced Humble Indie Bundle 6. You may pay what you want for Torchlight, Shatter, Rochard, Vessel, and Space Pirates and Zombies. If you choose to pay more than the average price, you will also receive Dustforce.

Each of these games works on Linux, as well as Windows and Mac. Ubuntu users have the option to redeem these games from the Ubuntu Software Center.

Update: four more games have been added to the bundle. These are Bit.Trip.Runner, Jamestown, Gratuitous Space Battles, and Wizorb.

Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) Is Reaching End of Life

With all Ubuntu versions, support will eventually end.  For Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal), the end date will be October 28 , 2012.  This will be eighteen months after it was launched.

You cannot upgrade directly from 11.04 to 12.04, but you can do an incremental upgrade – first to 11.10, then to 12.04. Canonical has a list of instructions to help make this easier.

The end of life for Natty comes at the same time as the final release of Ubuntu 12.10, Quantal Quetzal.

Privacy Manger in Google Chrome

Google Chrome tends to be my browser of choice, simply because of the huge amount of applications in the Chrome Web Store. Now, there is an app that could make Google Chrome even better.

If you tend to like to change or at least check your privacy settings, Privacy Manager puts all of them into one place, with a simple drop-down list and on-off toggles:

Google Chrome with Privacy Manager

With a flick of a switch, Privacy Manager will let you disable third party cookies, manage automatic fill settings, enable safe browsing, and decide which caches and settings to clear on start-up.

Privacy Manager is a free extension to Google Chrome.

Ubuntu 12.10 Beta 1 Available for Download

On Thursday, September 6, Quantal Beta 1 was made available for download.  This is right on schedule.

To upgrade from Precise (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) on a desktop system, open Software Sources. Switch to the Updates tab and set “Notify me of a new Ubuntu version” to “For any new version.” Press Alt+F2 and type in “update-manager -d” (without the quotes) into the command box. Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release ‘12.10’ is available. Then you just need to click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

Download the Beta 1:

Beta 1 images can be downloaded from a location near you. Please note: The Ubuntu Desktop images are now bigger than a standard CD, and you should use a USB or DVD for installation.

Linux Users Targeted by Trojan

For years, Linux has been free from the threat of trojans, viruses and malware.  We Linux users have often watched as friends or family who use Windows have had passwords stolen, hard drives made inaccessable – figuring that it can’t happen to us.

According to an article in Techworld, we have now become a target in our own right. Russian computer security firm Dr. Web has reported finding a trojan that steals passwords on Linux as well as Mac OS X. Specifically, the backdoor trojan Wirenet.1 targets browser passwords for Firefox, Google Chrome, Chromium, Opera, as well as for applications such as Thunderbird, SeaMonkey and Pidgin.

Under Linux it copies itself to the ~/WIFIADAPT directory, then attempts to connect to a command and control server hosted at 212.7.208.65 using an AES encrypted channel.

The Techworld article had some good news, however: “the details of how this malware might grab root mode on a Linux system are unknown.” Without root access, the damage the trojan can do would be limited.

Just a suggestion, for those of us who use Ubuntu:

sudo apt-get install clamtk

Clamtk is a front end for the antivirus clamav. This gives us a free and open source antivirus option.
