Ubuntu Tweak Coming Soon with PPA Purge

The Ubuntu Tweak blog has just announced that the upcoming version of Ubuntu Tweak will have its own version of PPA Purge, inspired by the PPA Purge in Launchpad. It will be part of the Ubuntu Tweak Package Cleaner:

By using PPA Purge, you will be able to go back to the original packages easily if something happens with the PPA. (I have been somewhat leery about using PPAs myself, unless I know for certain that they won’t interfere with the packages I already have installed. This will fix my concern.)

TualatriX is calling for testers to help in testing the upcoming Ubuntu Tweak. The testing source is available for Ubuntu versions from Hardy through Maverick. It can be added easily, in the more recent versions of Ubuntu, simply by using the command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-tweak-testing/ppa

I have not been able to find any bugs in the version for Maverick.

Aptitude Removed from Maverick Meerkat

I was startled today to find that aptitude has been removed from Ubuntu 10.10, Maverick Meerkat. It is still in the repositories, so if you are like me and insist on having the additional capabilities that aptitude affords, you will be able to download it.

This appears to be an official decision by Ubuntu developers:

ubuntu-meta (1.199) maverick; urgency=low

* Remove remaining traces of hppa and lpia.
* Policy version 3.8.4.
* Refreshed dependencies
* Removed aptitude from standard
* Removed tasksel from minimal

The Ubuntu Sources List Generator Is Now Available for Maverick

The Ubuntu Sources List Generator is now updated to include Maverick Meerkat Alpha 1. The available third party repositories so far include AWN (Avant Window Navigator), Chromium, Conky, Esmska, the Google repositories (both regular and testing), Mozilla Daily Build Team, muCommander, Opera, Oracle 10g DB, Pidging, SABnzd, Webmin, X Updates, and Yuuguu. There will of course be more repositories listed as they become available for Maverick.

The starting page for the Ubuntu Sources List Generator asks first for your country and for the Ubuntu version you are using:

Once you make your choices about what you want to include – both regular Ubuntu repositories and third party, you come to a second page:

Toward the bottom of that page come the third party repositories. Here, I just selected a few:

Once Ailurus (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ailurus/ppa) and Ubuntu Tweak (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa) become available for Maverick, it will be easier to add third party repositories, as they take care of the GPG keys. For now, the Ubuntu Sources List Generator gives clear instructions along with a line that can be cut and pasted into your terminal.

Note: I am still using Lucid at this time. Maverick Meerkat Alpha 1 hosed my computer. I believe this happened because I am using an Nvidia graphics card.

Maverick Meerkat Alpha 1 Has Been Released

Maverick Meerkat Alpha 1 has been released. It is the first alpha release of Ubuntu 10.10. As an alpha release, it should not be installed on production machines. The final, stable version will be released on October 10, 2010.

To upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a desktop system, simply press Alt + F2 and type in “update-manager -d” (without the quotes of course) into the command box. Update manager will then tell you: New distribution release ‘10.10’ is available. Then you just need to click on upgrade.

So far, the updates included in Maverick include:

The GNOME base platform has been updated to the current 2.31 version.

KDE has been updated to the current 4.5 beta 1 release.

Qt has been updated to the current 4.7 beta release.

Alpha 1 includes the 2.6.34-5.12 Linux kernel based on 2.6.34.

As always, get it while it’s hot. ISOs and torrents are available at:
