Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) Has Been Released

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise) is now available for download.  Because this is release day, Ubuntu’s servers are being pounded, so you may want to try one of the alternative download options, such as BitTorrent.  If you are upgrading an existing Ubuntu installation, you may wish to wait a few days because the upgrade servers are also being pounded,

If you are upgrading from Ubuntu 11.10 (Natty) or Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) rather than re-installing, you will need to type Alt + F2 and type in “update-manager” (without the quotes).  Update Manager will come up with a message telling you that the new version 12.04 is available.  Click on Upgrade, then follow the instructions.

Since Precise is the new LTS (Long Term Support) version of Ubuntu, it will be maintained and supported for 5 years on both desktop and server.

Ubuntu 12.10 Release Schedule

Even though Ubuntu 12.10 has not yet been named, a release schedule has been posted at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QReleaseSchedule:

June 7             Alpha 1

June 28           Alpha 2

August 2          Alpha 3

September 6    Beta 1

September 27  Beta 2

October 18       Final Release

I am looking forward to finding out what the “Q” animal will be.  Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too much longer.

Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) Reached End of Life on April 10, 2012

The support period for Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) ended on April 10, 2012.  Ubuntu Security Notices no longer include information or updated packages for Ubuntu 10.10.

The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 10.10 is via Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal).  Instructions and caveats for the upgrade can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NattyUpgrades.  Before you upgrade, make sure you have all updates applied to your current version.

Note that upgrades to version 11.04 and beyond are only supported in multiple steps, via an upgrade first to 11.04, then to 11.10. Both Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 11.10 continue to be actively supported with security updates and select high-impact bug fixes.
