Saucy Salamander Alpha 2 Released for Flavors

Saucy Salamander Alpha 2 has been released for use by testers and other courageous people.  The flavors that are included are Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Gnome, and Ubuntu Kylin.

Pre-releases of Saucy are not recommended for people who are using production systems, or for those who don’t have tolerance for breakage.  However, if you would like to help out the developers by testing and reporting bugs, alphas may be for you.

Ubuntu 13.10 itself is not being released in an alpha version.  To test it, you still need to click on Alt + F2 and type in “update-manager -d” (without the quotes) and follow the on-screen instructions.  Saucy hosed my system a couple of days ago, so just be forewarned.

Steam Summer Sale

Steam is having its big summer sale until July 22, 2013.  This is a humongous sale with daily and flash deals, as well as other sale prices. Flash sales are the best if you can catch them.  The sale also extends to Steam for Linux.  The prices are out of this world!  Excellent indie games FTL and SPAZ (Space Pirates and Zombies) are available for $2.49 and $1.99, respectively.  I’m sure you will find something you like, if you are into gaming at all.  🙂

How to Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10

I am at the point where I am considering upgrading to Saucy (Ubuntu 13.10) on one of my two dual-boots.  I am debating how much breakage I can stand this early in the cycle.  😉  Anyway, here are the instructions for the courageous:

To upgrade from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 on a desktop system:

The instructions say to first open up Software Sources.

Then, you need to press Alt + F2 and type in “update-manager -d” (without the quotes).

Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release ‘13.10’ is available.

Then, just click on “Upgrade” and follow the on-screen instructions.

Users of other Ubuntu releases need to upgrade first to 12.04, and then to 13.10.

Ubuntu 13.10 isos can be downloaded from: (Ubuntu Desktop and Server) (Ubuntu Cloud Server) (Ubuntu Netboot) (Ubuntu Core) (Edubuntu DVD) (Kubuntu) (Lubuntu) (Ubuntu Studio) (Ubuntu-GNOME) (UbuntuKylin) (Xubuntu)
