Oneiric Ocelot Alpha 2 Ready For Download

Oneiric Ocelot (Ubuntu 11.10) is now available for download.

To upgrade from Ubuntu 11.04 on a desktop system, press Alt+F2 and type in “update-manager -d” (without the quotes) into the command box. Update Manager will then tell you: New distribution release ‘11.10’ is available. Then you just need to click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

Although it is possible to download the Alpha 2, most of the images are oversize. If that is the case, you can use either a DVD or USB for installation rather than a CD.

You can download Alpha 2 ISOs from: (Ubuntu and Ubuntu Server) (Ubuntu Cloud Server) (Xubuntu) (Edubuntu DVD)

Some of the key packages ;making their first appearance with Alpha 2 are:

Linux Kernel 3.0-rc5
gcc 4.6.1 compiler
Firefox 5.0
Thunderbird 5.0
A Mesa 7.11 snapshot

Alpha 2 contains GNOME 3.0, with some parts upgraded to the 3.1.2 alpha releases. Unity, the theme, and Ayatana scrollbars were updated for GTK/GNOME3.

The standard email client is now Mozilla Thunderbird. GNOME Evolution will still be supported, but is not on the CD images.

I will not be testing Oneiric at this early stage, because I now am in the process of getting a volunteer job where I can work at home with my computer. The job will be with the Logan County (CO) Humane Society, using Animal Shelter Manager. I was very happy to find that ASM works on my Ubuntu box.
