CrossOver 9.1

Codeweavers released CrossOver 9.1 and CrossOver Games 9.1 yesterday (July28), for both Linux and Mac.

CrossOver 9.1 incorporates Wine 1.2, which was released on July 16. Wine is a compatibility layer which allows people to run Windows software on Unix-like systems (like Linux), without needing to run Windows itself. Codeweavers has worked to make a front end for Wine that is user friendly.

CrossOver Games 9.1 now supports StarCraft II as well as Star Trek Online. The regular CrossOver update includes improvements to all Microsoft Office versions, and improvements in Quicken 2010 support.

The Codeweavers press release can be found here.

Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.5 Has Been Released

Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.5 has been officially released.  I reported on it in its testing phase; now it is in the official repository.  It now supports Maverick (Ubuntu 10.10).

If you have not already installed the official version on your computer, here are the commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.5 now includes Purge PPA. Now, you can remove those PPA packages that make your system unstable or that you decide you don’t want, by a few clicks.

Up until now, the Source Center has had one defect. It could be hard to revert to the previous version of a package if you didn’t like the one in the PPA. You might not get all the packages properly downgraded to the one in the official repository. Ubuntu Tweak’s new Purge PPA takes care of this problem.

The new section “Purge PPAs” is integrated into the “Package Cleaner”. It lists all of the PPAs you have enabled. You can purge one or more PPAs by selecting and pressing “Cleanup”.

More details are available at TualatriX’s blog.

sudo apt-get install sl

Thanks to Tech Drive-in, I just became aware of a brand-new command that is worth mentioning.

Have you ever mistyped sl instead of ls? If so – or even if not, but you have a great sense of humor – the small program sl is for you. To install, just type:

sudo apt-get install sl

Then, just type sl and see what happens!

For even more fun, try

sl -laF

The full list of configurations is available on the man page.

Testing the Latest Version of Ailurus

The upcoming version of Ailurus is ready for testing. It now includes Maverick Meerkat.

In order to enable the testing repository, just type:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ailurus/ailurus-experiment

sudo aptitude update

I have been using the latest version, since I am running Maverick (10.10). My only suggestion is that they should not enable repositories that do not yet exist. I had to uncheck some repositories after checking to include them. I imagine they will be up and running soon.

Maverick Alpha 2

I know this post is a bit late. My mother-in-law died last week. Maverick Alpha 2 was, of course, released on schedule last Thursday (July 1). The link is here for downloading the Alpha 2 iso.

I was not able to get the Alpha 2 iso to install on my computer. In order to run Maverick, I had to click on Alt+F2, then type in update-manager -d. Now, of course, I update normally.

One thing I find worthy of notice about Maverick is that the developers have given us Alt Ctrl Del back again. A window comes up politely, asking if you want to reboot or shut down. This is a massive improvement over the last few versions of Ubuntu, where a person had to look up instructions on how to re-enable Alt Ctrl Del. It is now enabled by default.
