Oneiric Ocelot Beta 2 Now Available

Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) Beta 2 is now available for download. Ubuntu is distributed on three types of images:

Desktop CD. This allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and to install it when you wish. There are two images available: PC (32 bit – Intel 86) desktop CD and 64 bit (AMD 64) desktop CD.

Server Install CD. This does not install a graphical user interface.

Alternate Install CD. This allows specialist installations of Ubuntu, such as setting up automated deployments or upgrading from older installations without network access. This also comes in two images – PC (Intel x86) and 64-bit (AMD 64).

For a desktop system, you can upgrade by pressing Alt + F2 and typing in “update-manager -d” (without the quotes) into the box. Update Manager will then tell you that the new distribution (11.10) is available. Then you just need to click on Upgrade and follow the instructions. (As always, the beta is not recommended for production machines.)

New features in Oneiric include:

Improved handling of 32-bit compatibility on AMD-64 systems. Ubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 provides “multiarch” support for installing 32-bit library and application packages on 64-bit systems. This means, for instance, that you can install 32-bit software such as skype or flash, without the need to install the ia32-libs compatibility packages.

Ubuntu Kernel. Beta 2 includes the 3.0.0-11.18 Ubuntu kernel which is based on the v3.0.4 upstream stable kernel.

For Ubuntu Desktop there is now revised DVD content. In Ubuntu 11.10 Beta 1, a revised smaller DVD based on community feedback was introduced. The new DVD has a more manageable size of 1.5G.

New applications include:

Thunderbird is now included as the default email client.

Deja Dup is included as the default backup tool, making it easy to upload backups to Ubuntu One.

The new Gwibber brings improved performance and a new interface.

GNOME has been updated to the current unstable version (3.1.92) on its way to GNOME 3.2.

LightDM now uses the Unity greeter by default.

Synaptic and pitivi are no longer included int he default install but are still available and supported in the Ubuntu repositories.

The Software Center has now added new “top rated” views. and allows you to edit or delete your own reviews.

For more information, you may wish to consult the Oneiric Beta 2 Technical Overview.
