Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) Has Been Released

On Thursday, Raring Ringtail (Ubuntu 13.04) was released.  For the first time, it carries a note that those who use UEFI should download the 64-bit version.  (I couldn’t, because Steam for windows games use things like .NET Framework 4.0 that will not work on a 64 bit system.)

To upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04 on a desktop system, first open Software Sources and make sure you are set to download the next version, not just the next LTS.  Then type Alt + F2 and enter “update manager” (without the quotes) into the command box.  Update Manager will tell you that “New distribution release ‘13.04’  is available.”   Then, click Upgrade and follow the instructions.

Users of other Ubuntu versions first need to upgrade to 12.10, then to 13.04.

The Ubuntu Downloader for Windows (WUBI) is not included in 13.04.  This was due to various bugs that were not fixed in time for the final release. Users who wish to try out Ubuntu without repartitioning a Windows system are encouraged to use a live system instead.

Ubuntu 13.04 will only be supported for 9 months.  Previous non-LTS releases were supported for 18 months.
13.04 images can be downloaded from a location near you. You can download 13.04 ISOs from: (Ubuntu Desktop and Server) (Ubuntu Cloud Server) (Ubuntu Netboot) (Ubuntu Core) (Edubuntu DVD) (Kubuntu) (Lubuntu) (Ubuntu Studio) (Ubuntu-GNOME) UbuntuKylin) (Xubuntu)

The Ubuntu 13.04 Beta Has Been Released

The Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) Final Beta was released yesterday.  The release candidate will be available on April 18, with the final release coming on April 25.

To upgrade from Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal) on a desktop system, press Alt + F2 and type in “update-manager -d” without the quotes.  Update Manager should then open up and tell you: New distribution release ‘13.04’ is available.  You then just need to click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you wish to make a clean install of Raring, the following beta images are available: (Ubuntu Desktop and Server) (Ubuntu Cloud Server) (Ubuntu Netboot) (Ubuntu Core) (Edubuntu DVD) (Kubuntu) (Lubuntu) (Ubuntu Studio) (Ubuntu-GNOME) (UbuntuKylin) (Xubuntu)

One bug warning:  The installer freezes on the “Preparing to Install” screen when an already existing Linux installation is present. Turning swap off before installing may help.
