Some Changes I Noticed

I have had the flu (like just about everybody!) and haven’t been able to post for a while.  Now I am back, and finding several things that I’m having to get used to.

1)  Ubuntu Tweak no longer has a PPA.  It can be downloaded from its home page.  After you download from there, Ubuntu Software Center will come up and let you install it.

2)  WordPress.com xmlrpc.php files have been under attack.  This threw me for a loop when I went to log into my usual blog editor (Scribefire) and found that the xmlrpc.php file would not work.  I have preferred that editor to the wordpress.com editor.

In other news:  Several months ago, I gave my daughter my old computer with a brand-new dvd-rom drive and a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04.  The computer is a bit slow but she liked the price tag ($0.00) and has not wanted me to install Windows.  This means I have had to do research on PPAs to keep my daughter’s computer updating properly.  This is good news, because my daughter is no longer using my own linux box quite so much.  😉

Ubuntu Tweak Will Continue

Just a short while ago, Tualatrix Chou, the developer of Ubuntu Tweak, announced that he was stopping the development of Ubuntu Tweak.  He left us with a cryptic comment:  “If making free software is not free, why doing this?”

Just today, he has announced that development of Ubuntu Tweak will continue.  Tualatrix has been under a lot of pressure with his daytime job and all of his work on Ubuntu Tweak.  Now, he will slow down development.  The Apps section is discontinued until he can find a way to deal with the network traffic/bandwidth issue he was having.

Ubuntu Tweak can be installed by the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

Ubuntu Tweak 0.8.0 Is Now Available

Ubuntu Tweak 0.8.0 is now available for download:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

A major change from Ubuntu Tweak 0.7.x is that the App Center and Source Center have been combined in a new section, Apps.   The Apps tab is where you will find apps that you either can’t download from Ubuntu Software Center, or can’t download the latest version from there.

A full description, including a link to download the version for Precise, can be found at http://blog.ubuntu-tweak.com/2012/10/08/ubuntu-tweak-0-8-0-the-apps-generation.html.

Here is a snapshot of the Apps section you will see:

Ubuntu Tweak 0.7.2 Has Been Released

Near the end of April, Ubuntu Tweak 0.7.0 was released.  It was a magnificent upgrade:

Four great features returned: App Center, Source Center, Templates and Scripts
Source Center is integrated with PPA Purge and App Center with Installed Apps
Improved Janitor with cleaning apps cache
Global fuzzy search
QuickLists Editor to edit the Unity Launcher
Login settings for 12.04
More Unity settings and new Workspace settings

Ubuntu Tweak 0.7.1 was mainly for bug fixes. On Ubuntu Tweak 0.7.2, Ubuntu Tweak has been integrated into System Settings.

As always, you can get your hands on all this Ubuntu Tweak goodness by bringing up the terminal (Ctl + Alt + t) and typing in:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

Please enjoy!

Ubuntu Tweak 0.6.1 Has Been Released

Ubuntu Tweak is a configuration tool to make life better for all of us.  It provides many desktop and system options that are not readily available (if at all) in the default desktop.

Some things that are new about Ubuntu Tweak 0.6.1:

Support has been added for Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin).

“Dash color” setting has been added to Unity Settings.

To install Ubuntu Tweak 0.6.1, run the following commands in terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

Here are some snapshots of Ubuntu Tweak 0.6.1:

Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 is Now Available for Precise and Other Ubuntu Versions

Ubuntu Tweak version 0.6 is now available for Precise, although it is not in the standard PPA yet. There are two PPAs that are available: Ubuntu Tweak Testing Source and Tualatrix’s Next PPA.

Tualatrix’s Next PPA covers only Precise and Oneiric. It is the cutting edge, first testing PPA. Here are the commands to include it:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/next
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

The Ubuntu Tweak Testing Source PPA (again for version 0.6) is available for Karmic, Lucid, Maverick, Natty, Oneiric and Precise. To include it, here are the commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-tweak-testing/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

Since I wrote this post, Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 stable has been released (only for Oneiric at this time):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

(For Oneiric users) If you prefer to stay with the most stable version, you may wish to remove the testing PPA(s) so you only get the updates to the stable release.

Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 Is Close to Release

Tualatrix has just announced on the Ubuntu Tweak Blog that Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 is close to being released. It is now available for Oneiric by opening the terminal or typing Alt + F2, and typing:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-tweak-testing/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

(I am still using the version for Oneiric, although I upgraded to Precise Pangolin yesterday.)

The major changes to Ubuntu Tweak include:

Support for three major desktop environments: Unity, Unity-2D, GNOME Shell.

More tweaks have been added – for instance, Unity Settings.

The usability of the Janitor has been improved.

Here is a shot of Unity Settings:

Please note: if you use the Unity launcher at the bottom as discussed by Web Upd8, there is a critical bug. When running Ubuntu Tweak 0.6, then going to Tweaks > Unity Settings, Unity crashes. The Unity Bottom Launcher must be removed before testing of Ubuntu Tweak 0.6.

Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 Beta Is Now Available

Tualatrix Chou has announced today that Ubuntu Tweak is available in Beta.

Here are the highlights of Ubuntu Tweak 0.6:

New UI
New clips feature: first screen information
All features are plugable
Package Cleaner becomes a new major feature as the “Janitor”

There are four major sections: Overview, Tweaks, Admins and Janitor. Here is the Tweaks section, as an example:

Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 is only for Natty and Oneiric. Oneiric is not well supported yet.

The “App Center” and “Source Center” are not developed yet. Tualatrix plans to provide them as plugins in the future.

If you want the “Source Center,” Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.x is still available, along with 0.6:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak-0

The ubuntu-tweak-0 package in the Next PPA is the old Ubuntu Tweak 0.5. You can use it as normal.

Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.8 Released with Support for Natty

Tualatrix has announced the release of Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.8, with some new tweaks and support for Natty Narwhal (Ubuntu 11.04). I have not been able to get Natty working on my computer, so I do not have screenshots of my own (yet).

Other new tweaks include:

Workspace switching with mouse wheel – to make switching desktop workspaces easier. You use this by enabling Workspace switching with mouse wheel (under desktop effects) and then pointing your cursor at the desktop’s blank area. Then you just need to make use of the mouse wheel.

Me Menu name setting – so you can set the name displayed to your actual name instead of the user name – or not have it show up.

Friendly error report – a button is now included to copy error message. Also, for some system errors, Ubuntu Tweak will display a guide to show how to fix the problem.

Support has also been added for Linux Mint 10.

To install Ubuntu Tweak, you need to type the following commands in terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.6 Has Been Released

Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.6 has just been released, with Desktop Recovery.  Here is the formal announcement by Tualatrix.

Desktop Recovery has three basic actions:

Backup: backup the current settings, keeping as many backups as you want;
Recover: recover the backup version;
Reset: even if you do not have a backup, you can reset to the default settings.

Desktop Recovery covers GNOME desktop settings; application settings which use GConf (Compiz, Nautilus…); and system components.

I recently covered the beta, so I don’t have a whole lot to add. I would love to know, however, how Tualatrix achieved his broken-desktop example. The broken panel is awesome!
