New Oneiric Wallpaper Blues

Within the past week or so, i have upgraded to Oneiric Ocelot Beta 2.

The new artwork for Oneiric appeared yesterday. It pleases some people, I am sure. I, on the other hand, was not able to find a single wallpaper I was really happy with. If you are like me, the easiest thing to do is to click on Ubuntu Software Center (the side button) and type “wallpaper” (without the quotes) into the search box.

You should find plenty of alternatives, such as ubuntu-wallpapers-extra and blubuntu-wallpapers. I am using Blubuntu for right now, as I try to find something even better. (I definitely have a weakness for blue.)

Other places you might want to try for wallpapers is, or (There are others – Google is very helpful.) With these, all you have to do is to download them ihto your Pictures folder, and then just make sure in Appearances (right-click on the desktop), you have the selection on the top left changed from Wallpaper to Pictures Folder.

Please note: Oneiric Beta 2 is crash-happy. This should be resolved before the final version is released, so I won’t worry you, except to remark that they really mean not to put this on production machines. 😉

New Default Wallpaper for Maverick

After a certain amount of complaining by the Ubuntu community, the original default wallpaper for Maverick was changed yesterday (9/14/10). Here is the new version:

The new wallpaper looks luminous, and still definitely purple. The old version with its big red dots (clown noses, anyone?) looked to me like a four year old designed it. Well, maybe I shouldn’t say that because it is an insult to four year olds. 😉

Bisigi Themes for Maverick – Test PPA

The beautiful set of Bisigi themes now has a testing PPA from which you can install the themes you want, or the entire collection. All of the themes are beautiful. For example, here is the Ellana theme with wallpaper:

To install the testing PPA, you will need the following terminal command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bisigi/dev && sudo apt-get update

Then, if you wish to install all 14 of the themes at once, all you need to do is type:

sudo apt-get install bisigi-themes

Tech Drive-in has included a list of individual themes and how to install them. There are so many beautiful themes, though, that I prefer to install them all.

One warning if you use the default Ubuntu placement of the close and other buttons (on the left side) – in the Bisigi themes, the buttons are put on the right side. This is the way they used to be in Ubuntu, so it doesn’t take too much getting used to.

Lucid Lynx News

There is so much news for Lucid Lynx this week that I hardly know where to start.

I have mentioned bisigi-themes before, since the themes are a magnificent collection of wallpaper, themes and icons.  Bisigi-themes have now been moved to the regular Lucid Lynx repository, as opposed to testing.  If you have an eye for beautiful artwork, you should try:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bisigi/ppa

sudo aptitude install bisigi-themes

Ailurus also has a new release – Ailurus 10.04.2.  One very welcome addition to this version is that Ailurus now has a Quick Start entry under Applications > System Tools.  For instance, here is the Install Software section:

The new quick start sections make it easy to find out how much you can do with Ailurus, and how powerful it is.

Lucid Lynx New Wallpaper and Themes

The new wallpaper for Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04) has arrived. The main color is now purple – quite a change from the variations of orange and brown we have been seeing.

There are also two brand-new themes: Ambiance and Radiance. Ambiance is dark:

Radiance is light:

The Beta 1 release is scheduled for March 18. I wonder what new surprises we will find then!

Merry Christmas!

Just in time for Christmas, the How-To Geek has posted a magnificent set of Christmas wallpapers. I have put my favorite on my desktop:

Of course, there are other beauties as well.

Please have fun and keep safe this holiday season. May God bless you all!
