Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) Has Been Released

Utopic Unicorn has been released.  It is now available to download and install.

If you are upgrading from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty) on a desktop system:

Press Alt+F2 and type in “update-manager” (without the quotes) into the command box.

Update Manager should then tell you:  New distribution release ‘14.10’ is available.

Click Upgrade and follow the instructions.

Ubuntu 14.10 Final Beta Has Been Released

The Ubuntu team has now announced the final Beta release of Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) Desktop, Server, Cloud and Core versions.  The release also includes the Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu Studio and Xubuntu flavors.

As announced by Adam Conrad yesterday, Utopic “continues Ubuntu’s proud tradition of integrating the latest and greatest opens source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.  The team has been hard at work through this cycle, introducing new features and fixing bugs.”

To upgrade to Ubuntu 14.10 Final Beta from Ubuntu 14.04, follow these instructions:

Lubuntu:
Lubuntu is a flavor of Ubuntu that targets to be lighter, less

Beta 1 Releases Available for Ubuntu Flavors

The Ubuntu 14.10 Beta 1 release is now available for Ubuntu flavors:  GNOME, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Kylin and Ubuntu Cloud.

The Ubuntu GNOME Beta 1 includes GNOME Shell 3.12.

The Kubuntu Beta 1 includes KDE Platform 4.14. (The KDE Plasma 5 version is available in a separate image.)

The first beta version for regular Ubuntu 14.10 will be available on September 25.

Ubuntu 14.10 Alpha 2 Releases Now Available for Flavors

Members of the 14.10 Ubuntu family are now out in Alpha 2.  In this cycle, the four versions available for download are GNOME, Kubuntu, Lubuntu and Kylin.  If you want to help test, or just want to see the new features, here they are for download:

Utopic Unicorn Alpha 1 Available for Ubuntu Flavors

As stated in the Utopic Release Schedule, Thursday, June 26 was the date for Alpha 1 releases for Utopic opt-in flavors.  This alpha features images for Kubuntu, Lubuntu Ubuntu GNOME, UbuntuKylin and the Ubuntu Cloud images.  The Alpha 2 and Beta 1 are also for opt-in flavors only.  The first Ubuntu 14.10 will be the final Beta, on September 25.

As always, pre-releases are not encouraged for anyone who needs a stable system.  When it comes to alphas, breakage happens.  😉

 

Utopic Unicorn (Ubuntu 14.10) Release Schedule

Now that I have finally gotten Trusty to work on my computer, it is time for the release schedule for Utopic!

Ubuntu 14.10 release schedule:

June 26th: Ubuntu 14.10 Alpha 1 (for opt-in flavors)

July 31st: Ubuntu 14.10 Alpha 2 (for opt-in flavors)

August 28th: Ubuntu 14.10 Beta 1 (for opt-in flavors)

September 25th: Ubuntu 14.10 Final Beta

October 16th: Ubuntu 14.10 Release Candidate

October 23rd: Ubuntu 14.10 Final Release

Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) Release Schedule

The release schedule for Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) has been posted to lthe Ubuntu Wiki.  Here are the important dates:

June 26     Alpha 1 (for opt-in flavors)

July 24       Alpha 2 (for opt-in flavors)

August 28  Beta 1 (for opt-in flavors)

September 25    Final Beta (for all versions)

October 16   Final Release (again, for all versions)

The Alphas and the first Beta are for Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu and other flavors.  These do not have to follow the same release schedule as Ubuntu itself.
