Natty Alpha 3

Natty Narwhal Alpha 3 was released on March 3. I have not been able to use Natty because the Nvidia driver was not up-to-date. Otherwise, I would have kept better track.

As always, to upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) on a desktop system, press Alt + F2 and type the words “update-manager -d” (without the quotes) into the command box. The update manager should then tell you: “New distribution release ‘11.04’ is available. Then you just need to click Upgrade and follow the instructions.

You can download Alpha 3 ISOs from: (Ubuntu Desktop and Server) (Ubuntu Server for UEC and EC2) (Ubuntu Netbook ARM) (Kubuntu) (Xubuntu) (Edubuntu DVD) (Ubuntu Studio) (Mythbuntu)

Some of the new features with this Alpha 3 release are:

Linux Kernel 2.6.38-rc6
LibreOffice 3.3.1
Upstart 0.9
Dpkg 1.16.0

The binary video drivers -fglrx and -nvidia do not have XServer 1.10 compatibility, so they do not function in Alpha 3. The exact ETAs of the AMD and Nvidia drivers are still not known. The Beta 1 will (most likely) be out on March 31. I am hoping to be able to test Natty then. 🙂

I was able to load Alpha 3 into a VM and get it to work…sorta. The video was quirky. It left lots of remnants making it difficult to work after a period of time. I haven’t tried it on a spare drive for exactly the reason you state about nVidia drives. We’ll see what happens when the beta arrives.

I’m glad you at least got a glimpse of Natty. My last glimpses were around Alpha 1, when I got it to work for about 24 hours on my machine. It decided to die on me just as I was going to post an article. 😉

You didn’t miss much. W/o 3D stuff, it looks like Maverick. Some minor icon differences, but the unity stuff was too unstable to see much. It will be a bit confusing until we get used to it.
