Ubuntu 11.04 to Move to Unity

Jono Bacon of Ubuntu fame has posted in an article that Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) will be shipping with Unity instead of Gnome Shell. Unity was already shipped on the Ubuntu Netbook Edition in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. Bacon claims that “users and OEMs have been enjoying the experience.” I don’t know about OEMs, but I’ve read articles by users that have said they will stay with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx until 11.04 comes out, so that the bugs in Unity will hopefully be fixed.

Actually, I can say something about one OEM, System 76. Their starting netbook is still shipping with Lucid. ZaReason’s netbook, on the other hand, is shipping with Ubuntu Netbook Edition (with Unity) as an option.

Bacon stressed in his post that Ubuntu is still a GNOME distribution, shipping GNOME apps. As he posted, “The only difference is that Unity is a different shell for GNOME, but we continue to support the latest GNOME Shell development work in the Ubuntu archives.”

I plan to run Natty Narwhal Alpha 1 in Testdrive, and will see if Unity is already the default shell at that time.
